“Django Unchained” (Tarantino) Meets “Lincoln” (Spielberg)

I Got Spurs That Django, Django, Django…

There will be no Django Unchained in Los Angeles tonight. Or, more accurately, there will be no premiere party with a red carpet.

The Weinstein Company canceled its LA premiere for the Quentin Tarantino-directed film. They’re still going to screen the picture for cast members and families who haven’t seen it, but they’re canning the celebratory aspects. According to the Weinstein Company PR team:

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the tragedy in Newtown, CT, and in this time of national mourning we have decided to forgo our scheduled event.”

The body count in Django Unchained — given that it’s a Quentin Tarantino film — is way, way high. The film hits theaters on Christmas Day so we can consider “Peace on Earth” while amping up on slave-era violence. It will likely pack the theaters, Rotten Tomatoes has it with 100% fresh reviews as we write this. We wish we were smart enough to figure out what all of this means about violence in America and what should be done. We are devastated, like everyone else, by what happened in Connecticut, but doubt that a red carpet arrival for Tarantino’s spaghetti-western ultra-violence-fest has much bearing on it.

Leaving those weighty issues aside, here at the Smack, we have taken Tarantino’s Django Unchained and put it in our atom collider with Spielberg’s Lincoln and come out with the Lincoln Unchained Smashup. That ought to hold everyone until Christmas.
