Smacking Down Oscar’s Final Five

Best Picture 2008

BZ-Editor
Yes, we know. The Oscars have managed to create one of the least suspenseful “Best Picture” races in recent memory. Had they thrown in a wild card like “
The Dark Knight” (or even, although less threatening to take the big prize, “Wall-E“) it would have sent our fans and pundits into the stratosphere. At least, based on our own polls, it would have sent MOVIE SMACKDOWN fans, critics and voters into happy days on a level that could rival the Obama inauguration.

Instead, Academy voters decided we should be voting on “important” films that very few people have seen, like “Frost/Nixon” and “The Reader” and “Milk,” none of which have a ghost of a chance of actually winning. Instead, the race comes down to the eventful, but to many, underwhelming “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” and the film which could have been the sleeper sensation but has already won all the big awards thus making it the favorite, Slumdog Millionaire.”

Let’s face it, “Slumdog Millionaire” is going to win the Oscar. Done. Over. And all the hype you hear anywhere is just that, hype.

But we just can’t help ourselves. Armed with the technology to submit the Academy’s choices to our readers, we have to do it. Yes, you, the Movie Smackdown! reader and fan, must be heard. Your voices cry out to make your own statement.

Drawing inspiration from career experiences as a CNN correspondent, TV Academy chairman, creator of five produced primetime network TV series, and fast-food frycook, Bryce is the Editor-in-Chief of "Movie Smackdown." While he freely admits to having written the screenplay for the reviewer-savaged "Mortal Kombat: Annihilation," he hopes the fact that he also won the Writers Guild award a couple of years ago will cause you to cut him some slack. That, plus the fact that he has a new StudioCanal produced feature film, “The Last Battle,” shooting this summer in Europe about the end of World War II. He's also a member of the Directors Guild, Screen Actors Guild, and a past enthusiast of the Merry Marvel Marching Society. His new what-if book series, “Breakpoint,” just won the prestigious Sidewise Award for Alternate History, and has so far tackled JFK not being assassinated and The Beatles staying together.
